High-res commercial satellite launches from California coast

Atlas V rocket carrying the WorldView-4 satellite for DigitalGlobe lifted off from Space Launch Complex-3 November 11 at 10:30 a.m. PST. "ULA is honored to celebrate the successful launch of the WorldView-4 satellite for DigitalGlobe and Lockheed Martin", said Gary Wentz, ULA vice president of Human and Commercial Services.

Lockheed Martin has successfully launched the WorldView-4 commercial remote sensing spacecraft for DigitalGlobe, Inc. The United Launch Alliance Atlas V launch that delivered the satellite to orbit was provided by Lockheed Martin Commercial Launch Services.

 

On Sept. 15, wildfires spread through Vandenberg Air Force Base's South Base. It is operated by Colorado-based DigitalGlobe, which provides high-resolution images for government and private customers including first responders. NASA and NOAA satellite, GOES-R will launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Base. Both satellites can capture images of objects as small as 1 foot across.

The launch was postponed numerous times.

 

The launch decision authority, Col. Chris Moss, says the launch was the result of extraordinary teamwork between the 30th Space Wing and our United Launch Alliance.

 

The satellite was supposed to launch in September, but was delayed by a minor tank leak and two wildfires at the sprawling base.

 

The fires forced the evacuation of administrative buildings, but did not affect the launch complex. Firefighters who were assigned to the launch were diverted to corralling the flames.
